Many model railroaders would like to exchange their old interface for the modern 21MTC version when converting their aged Märklin® locomotives and look for a simple and affordable opportunity to do so.

For this application, ESU offers digital conversion sets. Besides a LokPilot V4.0 M4 (64614) multi-protocol digital decoder with 21MTC interface, the set includes one of three appropriate permanent magnets, two choke coils as well as the appropriate adapter board 51968. The adapter board 51968 simulates the well-known Delta® bzw. 6090x decoders in shape and size and in most cases, can be plugged directly into the specified holding.

Another advantage of the interface is that a subsequent decoder change can be carried out without soldering.

Operational modes

The LokPilot V4.0 M4 is multi-protocol decoder meaning it speaks all common data formats such as DCC, Motorola® and Selectix® as well as M4. In DCC mode 14-128 speed steps are possible, as well as 2- and 4-digit addresses. You can activate up to 28 functions. Thanks to RailComPlus®, the decoders will be automatically recognized by a suitable command station. It is able to control all DCC programming modes and thus can be driven and programmed by all DCC-compatible digital command stations. CV values can be read out on the main track with corresponding command stations, thanks to RailCom®. There are indexed CVs for command stations which are only able to program CVs from 1-255. Motorola® users benefit from up to 28 speed steps with 255 addresses. Three further Motorola® addresses allow the activation of 16 functions. The installed programming mode makes re-programming with the venerable Control Unit® 6021 also possible. The M4 protocol ensures an automatic recognition of the decoder by mfx®-compatible command stations (e.g. Märklin® Central Station or mobile station®). Reprogramming of M4 decoders is still possible with the mentioned command stations, like with original Märklin® decoders. The LokPilot V4.0 M4 decoder auto-detects the known Märklin® braking sectors as well as the ZIMO® HLU braking commands or the Lenz® ABC system. Braking with DCC brake generators or with DC (“Brake on DC”) is supported. Furthermore you will be able to stop your train by using the Selectrix® braking diode. The LokPilot 4.0 decoder can be used for both analogue DC or AC locomotives. The decoder automatically switches between the different operating modes “on-the-fly”. In most cases one does not have to adjust anything.

Motor control

The LokPilot V4.0 M4 decoder is equipped with fifth generation load compensation. Load control can either be adjusted to the model manually with the aid of 5 parameters or by using the “auto tune” feature of the decoder. This results in automatic adjustment of the motor characteristics in a test run. Never was it easier to adapt the control parameters to the motor. ESU decoders control all motor types without any problem, regardless if they are “classic” Märklin® motors, Fleischmann® round motors or coreless motors (e.g. Faulhaber®) or modern motors with flywheel(s). With Dynamic Drive Control (DDC) you can limit the influence of load control and thus you will be able to finely control your locomotive in the yard and when traversing turnouts while the speed will be prototypically reduced while traveling (at higher speeds) on a gradient on the mainline. SoftDrive® sinus motors, as used in many Märklin® models, can also be controlled by the LokPilot V4.0 M4 decoder. Thanks to SUSI this will also work for Trix® locos.

The LokPilot Fx V4.0 is multi-protocol decoder meaning it speaks all common data formats such as DCC, Motorola® and Selectix®. In DCC mode 14-128 speed steps are possible, as well as 2- and 4-digit addresses. You can activate up to 28 functions. Thanks to RailComPlus®, the decoders will be automatically recognized by a suitable command station (e.g. ECoS). It is able to control all DCC programming modes und thus can be driven and programmed by all DCC-compatible digital command stations. CV values can be read out on the main track with corresponding command stations, thanks to RailCom®. There are indexed CVs for command stations which are only able to program CVs from 1-255 (e.g. ROCO® Multimaus). Motorola® users benefit from up to 28 speed steps with 255 addresses. Three further Motorola® addresses allow the activation of 16 functions. The installed programming mode makes re-programming with the venerable Control Unit® 6021 also possible. The LokPilot Fx V4.0 decoder auto-detects the known Märklin® braking sectors as well as the ZIMO® HLU braking commands or the Lenz® ABC system. Braking with DCC brake generators or with DC (“Brake on DC”) is supported. Furthermore you will be able to stop your train by using the Selectrix® braking diode. Although this decoder has no motor it is, however, important for the functional decoder as well as the car decoder that they recognize the entrance of a brake section. The LokPilot Fx 4.0 decoder can be used for both analogue DC or AC locomotives. The decoder automatically switches between the different operating modes “on-the-fly”. In most cases one does not have to adjust anything.

Interaction

The LokPilot Fx V4.0 can also be operated with a LokSound V4.0 and a LokPilot V4.0 decoder: Therefore it´s possible to e.g. install a LokSound V4.0 decoder into the loco of a trainset and equip the control car with a LokPilot Fx V4.0. Provided they have the same address, the decoders will act absolutely identical. The identical CV arrangement makes the synchronisation of both decoders easier.

Functions

The LokPilot Fx V4.0 decoder has 6 function outputs. The wire harness version is usually amplified. For the 21MTC version you can select between an amplified or a logic level for AUX3 and AUX4. All important light functions are available. The brightness of each output can be adjusted separately.

This decoder supersedes from now on the „well and good“ LokPilot V3.0 DCC Decoder, which has achieved an excellent reputation among model railroaders all around the world. The new LokPilot V4.0 DCC is much "better“ in many respects based on the LokPilot family’s high standard performance. The LokPilot V4.0 Decoder will be offered in several varieties like its forerunner. The DCC version which we describe here is meant for all users who look for a temporary digital decoder and intend to use DCC and RailCom®. A further range of interface options enables you to find the appropriate decoder for your loco any time.

Operational modes

The LokPilot V4.0 DCC supports, like its forerunners the world-wide standardized DCC protocol and can be used in combination with all DCC systems on the market. It can also be used for DC operation and recognizes operational modes automatically „on-the-fly". As a matter of course there are up to 9999 addresses in DCC operation. The LokPilot V4.0 DCC supports all common braking sections such as Zimo® HLU. A new feature is the ABC braking mode. Newly introduced by Lenz®, it simplifies stoppage in front of the signal thanks to its asymmetrical DCC signal. The LokPilot V4.0 DCC also fully supports the RailCom® standard and can be programmed with all current digital command stations.

Also new is the additional connection facility for an external „Power Pack". This optionally (coming in 2011) available energy store is able to energize the motor up to 2 seconds if the power supply is interrupted and makes you finally forget dirty tracks!

Motor management

From a LokPilot decoder, you rightly expect an excellent motor management. With the LokPilot V4.0 DCC, ESU introduces the once more improved fifth generation of load control. The standard frequency is adjusted adaptively to the speed with a basic frequency of 40 kHz. The result is an even better slow driving performance, ideal for older 3-pole or coreless motors. It’s also child’s play to adjust the regulation to the respective model. With this ESU sets a new standard. Nowhere else will you find better motor control. Promised!

Mechanics

Despite all its new functions, the new LokPilot V4.0 DCC is 9% smaller than its forerunner and thus easier to install. Beside the known LokPilot versions, with 8-pin or 6-pin NEM interface, and a new version with a 21MTC connector.

Analog operation

With LokPilot V4.0 DCC it’s not only possible to limit the start and top speed of your loco in analog mode, you can even determine which of the functions should be active.

Functions

The LokPilot V4.0 DCC decoder has 4 function outputs which achieve 250 mA load each(the all-new PluX22 Version has even nine function outputs!). They are separately dimmable and can be allocated individually to different light functions such as flashing light, firebox flicker, strobe – and double strobe, Ditch Light etc. Beyond that, the 21MTC connector version has two logical outputs which can be made alive via the adapter board 51968. Of course, the decoder is able to control the automatic decoupling move and push time for Roco®, Krois® and Telex® couplers and also offers a high beam function as a new feature. The „LED mode“ ensures that the light effects are set correctly when using LEDs.

Programming

The LokPilot V4.0 DCC supports all DCC programming modes including POM (Programming on the Main). Programming configuration variables (CV’s) is especially simple for owners of our ECoS control station: all options are displayed in plain language on the large screen and can easily be edited – even during operation on the layout.

Peace of mind

The LokPilot V4.0 DCC is overload and short-circuit protected, updatable and can be programmed comfortably from you command station or from your PC with the help of the ESU LokProgrammer. You are able to download brand-new software versions from our website as they become available. The software helps you to configure the decoder. That´s how comfort should be. With the LokPilot V4.0 DCC decoder you do not only purchase a very good decoder but also benefit from ESU’s years of experience in producing innovative digital decoders.

Beside the known LokPilot versions, with 8-pin or 6-pin NEM interface as well as with a 21MTC connector, there is now a further version with a PluX12 plug (at the wire harness) which can be directly plugged into many of the new ROCO® locomotives.

Analog operation

With LokPilot V4.0 it’s not only possible to limit the start and top speed of your loco in analog mode, you can even determine which of the functions should be active. Even load control is active. Therefore, the LokPilot V4.0 is ideal for locos, which are too fast with a conventional reverser relay. At last your locos crawl in analog mode as slowly as you’re used to with digital layouts.

Functions

The LokPilot V4.0 decoder has 4 function outputs which achieve 250 mA load each. They are separately dimmable and can be allocated individually to different light functions such as flashing light, firebox flicker, strobe – and double strobe, Ditch Light etc. Beyond that, the 21MTC connector version has two logical outputs which can be made alive via the adapter board 51968. Programming

The LokPilot V4.0 supports all DCC programming modes including POM (Programming on the Main). All programming is done electronically; for Märklin® stations 6020, 6021, Mobile Station® and Central Station®. For these units the LokPilot V4.0 employs a time proven, easily acquired programming procedure. Programmed modifications during Motorola® operation are valid with DCC and Selectrix® operation and vice-versa. Programming configuration variables (CV’s) is especially simple for owners of our ECoS control station: all options are displayed in plain language on the large screen and can easily be edited – even during operation on the layout.

Accident prevention

The LokPilot V4.0 supports the indispensable wrong direction bit for operation on Märklin® layouts, preventing locos leaving an analog section and entering a digital part of the layout, from instantly reversing direction and backing out again. After an interruption, the decoder remembers its last status and starts up again, as quickly as possible.
